About IGAS 2011
June 1, 2011
Japan Graphic Arts Suppliers Committee
The Japan Graphic Arts Suppliers Committee (President: Yoshiharu Komori) has announced the following details regarding the International Graphic Arts Show (IGAS) 2011 to be held in September 2011.
Immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake, there was concern regarding whether or not we would be able to hold IGAS 2011. In addition to our confirmation that there were no effects on the venue infrastructure , including the surrounding traffic network, we received strong requests from many exhibitors who have made preparations for IGAS as an important target in their marketing strategies. Furthermore, we have been given powerful support from people in the printing industry, who asked us to hold IGAS for the purpose of business revitalization exactly because of the recent difficulties. For these reasons, we have decided to hold IGAS 2011 as originally planned.
The theme of IGAS 2011 is "Print Your Future! Print evolves together with the environment." By showing the future possibilities created by printing and exhibiting cutting-edge machinery and technologies in one building, IGAS 2011 will provide a lively location for business networking as well as future-oriented, positive solutions to people involved in printing related industries.
The scale for this event, which will be held in all halls of Tokyo Big Sight's East Building, includes a total of 305 companies and 2,658 booths (as of June 1, 2011). Considering the economic environment in Japan and the effects of the earthquake, the exhibition area is only about 60% the size of the previous event in 2007. However, exhibitors will include many venture corporations that are working energetically in digital fields, as well as major manufacturers from all over the world who handle prepress, printing, and post press.
The entrance system for IGAS 2011 has been revamped, and a new entrance system has been implemented in which visitors may enter the venue by touching their IC card to the gate . People may enter simply by "holding" up their IC commuting pass they use on trains or buses, or their cell phone equipped with IC card functions. This will greatly reduce congestion, and also allow visitors to enter the event smoothly. People who do not have IC commuting passes or other cards, such as overseas visitors and groups, may borrow an IC card.
IGAS is an international exhibition that is one of the world's four largest printing equipment exhibitions held on a rotating basis. It includes lectures and conferences that are appropriate for an international exhibition, such as the International Forum on the Environment, Global Print meetings , the Asian Symposium (Japanese Society of Printing Science and Technology) , the Autumn Seminar (Japanese Society of Printing Science and Technology), the World Printing Conference (Japan Federation of Printing Industries), and the All Japan Printing Industry Association Forum (All Japan Printing Industry Association ).
The latest research results from 14 laboratories at universities all over Japan are displayed in the "Advanced Technology Zone ," a standard offering at IGAS that is highly evaluated by people within and without Japan. Furthermore, exhibitions are also scheduled to be held by industry groups including Global Print, the Japan Printing Machinery Association, the All Japan Printing Industry Association , CIP4, and educational and training schools that work to cultivated talented people working in printing. Exhibitions are also gathered together for the convenience of visitors at the "Environmental Corner ," which discusses environmental issues involved in printing, and the "Digital Publishing Corner ," which features products and technologies related to the hot topic of electronic publishing.
IGAS 2011 will be held exactly six months after the earthquake. As the organizers of this event, we hope to use this exhibition provide even the slightest assistance to the restoration of the printing industry in the affected areas. For that reason we have decided to carry out various types of reconstruction support activities, such as the presentation of donations, special exhibitions in support of reconstruction, a reconstruction assistance "stamp rally," and more. We are hoping to make these support activities both enjoyable and exciting, and kindly ask for the cooperation of visitors and exhibitors alike.
Although the economic situation in Japan has worsened after the Great East Japan Earthquake, great efforts are being made towards reconstruction in both the public and private sectors. Our exhibitors have also been directly or indirectly affected by the earthquake in considerable ways, making them victims of this disaster. Regardless, we plan to use the IGAS exhibition to convey the underlying strength of the Japanese printing industry to the world at large. To that end, we believe that we must make IGAS 2011 a success, and we are making significant efforts as the organizer of IGAS. We ask for the support of everyone in the industry regarding these endeavors.
